Smoke / Strobe & UV
Disco lighting always looks its best when used in conjunction with a smoke / haze machine.
Some venues will not allow the use of a smoke machine as it can trigger the fire alarm so check this out first.

Disco Lighting Explained
Abstract Twister 4 HP : £15 - arguably the best "moonflower" effect on the market.
![]() |
Each unit produces 20 beams of light using 10 colours and 9 different gobos. The Twister 4 uses a 250 watt halogen lamp with advanced optics to produce a bright, razor sharp image. With its built in microphone and "Supersound" technology it sets a new standard in autonomous sound to light operation. Two Twisters on a stand will fill an entire dance floor with multiple changing shapes, changing colours, twisting, moving and flashing in time to the music. |
Abstract VRX Scanner : £20 - one of the best flat scanners on the market. VRX are installed in most UK clubs.

Each unit produces one bright beam using 10 colours and 8 different rotatable gobos.
The VRX scanner uses a 150 HDI discharge lamp with advanced optics to produce a very bright, razor sharp image. The unit features smooth motors attached to a mirror to move the image all the around the room. These units work best in pairs, as a bank of 4 or better still teamed up with VRX Gladiator barrel scanners. The VRX's are DMX compatible so they can be controlled by an on-site lighting engineer. Alternatively, using built in sound to light technology, two or more units can be linked together to produce a spectacular autonomous light show. |
Abstract VRX Gladiator : £25 - one of the best barrel scanners on the market. VRX are installed in most UK clubs.

Each unit produces several beams of light using 10 colours and 8 different rotatable gobos.
The VRX Gladiator scanner uses a 150 HDI discharge lamp with advanced optics to produce very bright, razor sharp images. The unit features smooth motors attached to a barrel of mirrors which can rotate and swivel throwing images all the around the room. These units work best in pairs, as a bank of 4 or better still teamed up with VRX Flat Scanners. The VRX are DMX compatible so they can be controlled by an on-site lighting engineer. Alternatively, using built on sound to light technology, two or more units can be linked together to produce a spectacular autonomous light show. |
Glossary of Terms:
Audience Blinder : Bright white stage lighting that is focused back at an Audience. The lighting engineer may bring up the audience blinders at a crescendo in the performance or in between tracks to light up the crowd.
Barrel Scanner : A type of lighting fixture which projects a single image onto a mini rotatable barrel of mirrors mounted on a swivelling mechanism. As the image reflects off several of the mirrors at once multiple reflections are produced. By controlling the rotation and swivel of the barrel, reflections can be "scanned" all around the room.
Dimmer Pack : An electrical device which controls the amount of current being sent to a par can / lantern. A DMX dimmer pack enables a lighting engineer to vary the intensity or brightness of a lamp from his lighting desk. He can then easily produce fade in / fade out, chase, blackout and other stage lighting effects.
DMX : Short for Digital Multiplex is the industry standard computer language used to control moving head lights, scanners, dimmer packs and other lighting fixtures from a lighting control desk. All lighting that needs to be controlled via DMX is linked via DMX cable in a long chain terminating at the lighting control desk.
Goal Post Lighting Truss : A framework for mounting lighting and effects; two tripod stands with a length of truss running between them, like a set of goal posts.
Gobo : Gobo is short for "go between". The Gobo is a glass or metal template that sits in between the lamp and lens. The gobo projects a pattern or shape onto the backdrop / dance floor.
Scanner : A type of lighting fixture which projects a single image onto a mirror mounted on a swivelling mechanism. By controlling the tilt / pitch of the mirror the image can me "scanned" to almost any position in the room
Smoke Machine : A device that can produce a smoke effect on stage / in a club. It works by squirting specially designed smoke fluid into a hot chamber and expelling the resulting gas through a small aperture resulting in clouds of smoke. Smoke or Haze machines are used to greatly enhance other lighting effects. Using smoke with scanners / moonflowers etc. reveals all the beams of light coming from each unit creating a spectacular effect.
Smoke Fluid : Fluid used in smoke machines / haze machines.
Sound to Light : A mode of operation common to many types of disco lights. The unit has an in-built microphone which activates various pre programmed cycles of movement, colours and gobo changes when it picks up ambient noise, music etc.
Strobe : Short for stroboscopic meaning; a series of high intensity flashes of light. Stroboscopic effects can cause action or dancing to appear to freeze, frame by frame. These kinds of effects have been shown to trigger epileptic fits in vulnerable individuals - make sure you have adequate signage warning people if you are going to use a strobe.
UV : Short for Ultra violet which literally means "beyond violet". It is a wavelength of light beyond the spectrum visible to the human eye. If you are using UV light at a party or in a club, brightly coloured objects will fluoresce under the UV light shining in colours humans can see.
